If you’ve chosen to pack your own belongings instead of using our packing services, we can still help – Cube Moving and Storage has been in the business of getting people to their new homes and business locations for a long time. Here are a few of our best packing tips to help keep your moving stress level low.

Local Moving Packing Tips
Walk through your home to take a quick inventory of your belongings; this will help when you’re choosing boxes and moving supplies. Take note of things you don’t want to bring with you – if there’s something you’ve been waiting to donate to charity, this is the perfect time.

• Hand-carry personal effects (checkbooks, passports and medication) and valuable jewelry; put them in a small box which can ride with you to your new home
• Empty clothing from dresser drawers and the contents of your closet into linen boxes
• DVDs, CDs and books should be packed in clearly labeled book boxes (books tend to be very heavy, and if the box is too large, it may become unmanageable or break under the strain)
• Place dishes and glassware in a china box with layers of packing paper between each
• Fragile items should be packed in a china box and labeled “FRAGILE”
• Unplug the cords from computers and electronics and place them in a labeled plastic bag; Cube Moving and Storage recommends moving electronics in china boxes whenever possible
• Pictures, mirrors and paintings should be packed in the appropriately-sized moving box and lined withpacking paper; large items which don’t fit into boxes may be handled by our expert movers upon arrival

Packing Tips for Long Distance Moving
Although packing for long distance moving is similar to packing for local moving, there are a few extra considerations. Your belongings have a long way to go, so they need to be properly secured in their boxes to make sure they arrive at your destination in the same condition.

• Hand-carry personal effects (checkbooks, passports and medication) and valuable jewelry; if you’re flying to your new home, we suggest keeping them in a handbag, briefcase or laptop computer case so you always have control over these items
• Liquid personal hygiene items (shampoo, conditioner), liquid soap (detergent or kitchen soap), oil, vinegar and other liquids should not be moved; one small leak can cause a huge catastrophe on a long distance move
• Pack small, breakable items in china boxes lined with packing paper after you’ve bubble-wrapped them
• Personal entertainment items, such as DVDs, CDs and books, should be packed in properly-labeled book boxes so they end up right where you need them in your new home
• Dishes and glassware should be placed in a china box and layered with heavy-duty packing paper
• Wine collections should be transported in a wine box to ensure each bottle’s safety
• Place your pieces of fine art, mirrors and framed photos in a box that’s just a little larger than they are; pad the sides with packing paper and layer paper between each piece as you would with dishware
